Heli-Coil Install
(Olds Quad 4 Head Example)

• Protect ALL holes and crevices from shavings. Use paper towels, duct tape, bolts, vacuum line, etc.
  For the head, I plugged the Fuel Injector holes with paper towels. I *stuffed* the head with paper towels. I then used duct tape to cover the head (that was also stuffed with paper towels to protect against any shavings that may make it past the duct tape.)
  Use your shop vac to keep the area clean. I like a very small shop vac that doesn't get in the way and is easy to move around.



• When you drill the hole, is important that the you drill *perpendicular* to the hole. Be careful NOT to drill at an angle. BEFORE you drill, check to make sure that your drill bit is perpendicular from straight-on and from the side.



• When tapping a hole, is VERY important that the you tap *perpendicular* to the hole. Be careful NOT to tap at an angle. BEFORE you tap, check to make sure that your tap is perpendicular from straight-on and from the side.



• For drilling: Use A LOT of WD-40! Before you drill, use WD-40. Use either a drill stop or electrical tap on the drill bit to mark the depth that you want to drill.
  • Drill a little, stop, remove the drill bit
  • Vacuum the shavings out of the hole
  • Clean the drill bit
  • SPRAY WD-40 into the hole and on the drill bit
  • Then, repeat until the hole is completely drilled out



• For tapping: Use MASSIVE amounts of WD-40!! Before you drill, use WD-40.
  NOTE: TAPS CAN AND *DO BREAK*!
  If you do not go *slowly* back the tap out often, clean the threads, and use WD-40, then the TAP WILL BREAK! If a tap breaks you are SOL! You will NEED a NUMBER of diamond tips drill bits to drill out the tap! In general, only a dealer has the knowledge and ability to remove broken taps or screw extractors. Trust me, I KNOW! (Thankfully, not by personal experience. But, by the experience of close friends.)
  An overview of how to tap a hole is as follows:
  • Tap a little, stop, remove the tap
  • Vacuum the shavings out of the hole
  • Clean the tap
  • SPRAY WD-40 into the hole and onto the tap
  • Then, repeat until the hole is completely tapped.
  
  Some examples:
  For aluminum: (starting from "0 degrees)
  • Turn the tap about 1/4 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/4 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/2 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/2 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Remove the tap.
  • Vacuum the shavings out of the hole
  • Clean the tap
  • SPRAY WD-40 into the hole and onto the tap
  • Then, repeat until the hole is completely tapped.
  
  For Cast Iron/etc: (starting from "0" degrees)
  • Turn the tap about 1/8 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/8 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/4 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Turn the tap about 1/4 turn forward.
  • Turn the tap back to zero.
  • Remove the tap.
  • Vacuum the shavings out of the hole
  • Clean the tap
  • SPRAY WD-40 into the hole and onto the tap
  • Then, repeat until the hole is completely tapped.
